Esa Lukala b.1945 is a multidisciplinary artist, working and living in Helsinki, Finland.

Member of Ornamo, (The Finnish Association of Designers), since 1974, and of Artists O (A Society of Artists) since 2014. He holds Digigraphie® by Epson' certification.

Lukala grew up in a artistic family with his father Arvo Lukala being a painter and illustrator and brother Juha Lukala being a scenographer. Lukala began his career by studying drawing and painting at Turku Art Society’s Drawing School from 1967-1969. During this time he became interested in printmaking methods and especially lithography. He went on to the University of Industrial Arts, in Helsinki where he studied fashion and photography between 1969-1973.

Lukala first exhibited his visual art in 1964-1979, during which time he also got known for designing jewellery for Turun Hopea Oy and Kultateollisuus Ky.

Whilst photography and the visual arts were always important and powerful influences, it was fashion Lukala dedicated himself to after graduating.

As a fashion designer Lukala has received recognition and numerous prestigious awards for his work. In 1980 and 1984 his designs were selected to be worn by the Finnish Olympic Team.

In 1990 he was named Fashion Designer of the Year, and 1995 he was awarded by the Kultainen Vaatepuu, for the Preston label he designed for L-Fashion Group Oy.

There was a period when Lukala worked artistically on commissions alongside his fashion design career, but did not exhibit. But in 2009 Lukala marked a return with a new body of  work and a string of solo and group exhibitions, commissions and projects, that he is still actively developing to this day.
